Over the years, I have kept up periodically with Tadao Yamagishi, a fellow
exchange student from those days, and his wife Katsuko. When I was in Tokyo
last month, they kindly invited me to a large dinner party attended by
many of the Tachikawa High School students whom I had not seen in decades.
It was an extraordinary and emotional evening for me. |
Suddenly it was 1962 all over again.
Everyone was older, of course, but some things do not change. The warmth
and friendliness that I remembered had not changed. The welcoming greetings
were still there. The camaraderie was still there. In some ways, we could
have been teenagers again. |
